Happy Birthday Jake

My boy is 5 years old. Amazed at how fast it goes. I am excited to watch him grow up but sad because the little baby is gone. Jake is an all-American kid. He is tough but soft and sweet at the same time. At school last year he told his teachers his favorite thing to do with Mommy was " hugs and kisses and play swords" That is Jake.
A couple weeks ago we were going out of town and I got into the car after work. Jake said "Mom, I have 3 questions. 1. how was your day? 2. how many people did you see? 3. I love you!"

He is very good to his sister. They love to play together. Jake is of course always the ring leader and often not fair with his "sharing" but what surprises me is that when Gabi throws a fit he re-directs her. Instead of getting " MOOOOOM, Gabi is crying, Gabi is _____" I will hear him say, " ok Gabi, you can have this one, or Gabi lets go play this" Then you hear her little voice say " Ok, Gakey"

At breakfast the other day I called my mom to let her know that Kurt would be home in time for me to go to work and they didnt need to come over. Jake caught the end of the conversation
J: "But who will come over with us"
Me: "no one, you can stay home alone, you are 5 now"
J: "really, the police wont come"
Me: "no. you know how to get food out of the pantry and get Gabi in her crib and sing rock-a-bye to Gabi right?"
J: yes
Me: and you can put her on the toilet right?
J:Yes
Me: ok, you can do it then right?
J: yeah!

I walk away and Jake turns to Gabi

"ok Gabs, when mom goes to work its just you and me. I will read you books and do rock-a-bye and put you to bed and get you anything you want, ok"

"OK Gakey!"

He is a great kid, stubborn as a mule, sweet as pie, smart and funny!
